A few weeks ago we took off to spend a weekend in Oceanside hanging out at the beach. Caleb was anxious to learn to surf, so I took him out for a while. He is coming right along and will be catching waves by the end of the summer, I bet.
We had lunch at our very favorite Fish 'n Chips joint right on the harbor. So yummy! Everything tastes better in the salty sea air.
After a day at the beach we checked into our room. It was a fabulous corner room with views over the bay and the ocean. We even had a visitor - a local raccoon dropped by to say hello.
That evening we drove down to Del Mar to check out the San Diego County Fair. We love this fair! A stop at the Pink's hot dog stand was a must. The Martha Stewart Dog is my fave - just like the one you stand in a LONG line for in LA.
We always enjoy seeing all the products for sale in the commercial buildings, but these guys lingered way too long at the fudge booth. They were mesmerized by the ton of buttery shiny nutty fudge being tempered on the big marble slab. It was mouthwatering. We had to get some.
And we couldn't get out the gate without a few huge Orange Juliuses, warm kettle corn, and a dozen sticky cinnamon rolls.Come on, admit it. The fair is always about the food, isn't it?
Actually, the boys started digging the hole the first day, and it was still there the second day, so they kept digging
and digging
and digging.
It became the size of a small room, so that just what the boys made it into. They covered the top with surfboards, boogie boards, and beach towels to make a roof, then climbed inside. They had fun playing in that hole all day.
When it was almost time to leave, they decided that they wanted to be buried alive in that hole, so Dylan, Caleb, and Luke put towels and buckets over their head to protect their faces from the sand, and had their brothers fill the hole back up. It was messy. Nate and Derek, and even Dad had way too much fun burying them up.
Then Dennis announced that it was time to go home, so we all got up to leave. You better believe they figured out a way to un-bury themselves real quick. Good thing too, before the tide rolled in.We had a great time in Oceanside. We are heading back to Oceanside next week for a whole week for a family reunion. Imagine what size hole these kids could dig in a whole week. I bet they could dig to China!
