Proud Nazi Mom

Who'd ever have thought I'd ever saying "That Nazi, he's my son!" and actually be proud about it?  Well this weekend I did just that because Nathan played Herr Zeller, an Austrian turned Nazi in his Middle School play, "The Sound of Music."  It wasn't a huge part, but a pretty decent part for a sixth grader.

For the ballroom scene Nathan got to wear a tux and waltz around the stage.  He had fun learning to ball room dance.  Herr Zeller is not the nicest fellow in the world and Nathan  kept in character the WHOLE time with a sour look on his face, rolling his eyes at the others' antics.

But as much fun as it was to ballroom dance, he had more fun in the scene where he got to just yell at people and boss them around!  He seemed to enjoy that very much.  He was mean!  Scary mean.  Why is it we love to play the bad guy?  I remember when I was in middle school, we did Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew."  Guess who got to be the shrew?  Me, of course.  Sure, I was no Nazi, but I did get to slap people.  Yep, that was fun!

One thing Nathan discovered after landing his role was that even though this was a musical, he didn't get to sing.  Apparently Nazis don't sing. Imagine that.  But they do get to yell, and yell he did.  I think he even scared the audience.

Nate was thrilled to see a few of his best buddies there to greet him after his first performance on Thursday night.  Carson and Tanner agreed that Nathan got a cool part.

Great Job, Nate!  You were really awesome up there, and you got even better each night you performed. You were just NASTY and MEAN, and when you are performing the part of a Nazi, that is a good thing.

I think I need a bumper sticker that says "Proud Nazi Mom!"

Or, maybe not.

He was awesome! He never once got out of character, or look nervous. He was so believable, and to an actor that is a high compliment (it must have been his Schwarz bloodline).
