Everything But the Kitchen Sink

First thing Monday morning there was quite a racket at our house.  Yes, there is usually always quite a racket going on around here, but this was bigger than usual.

These three big strong guys took their crowbars and mallets to my counter tops, but not before disassembling my kitchen sink.

They worked fast installing my new counter tops, and they did a great job.  They thought they might be done by Tuesday, but definitely Wednesday at the latest.  I was so looking forward to be able to get back into my fully functioning kitchen again Wednesday night!  (Silly Me!)  It has been a pain not having a kitchen, especially not having a sink!  So they finished Wednesday, and during those 15 minutes when I went to pick my kids up from school they left.

I came home to this:

Apparently reinstalling the sink was not part of the deal.  Standard procedure.  Had I known I would have made arrangements with a plumber.  Rats.

So then Dennis climbed under the sink to see if he could do it. (yea, right.)  And when he got down there he found this:

Rot from a slow leak.  Nice.

So now we need a plumber and someone to come rebuild the inside of the cupboard under the sink.

And then there is this problem:

The new counter tops are about a half inch lower than the old ones, so there is about a half inch gap between the granite and the back splash.

So now we need to hire a plumber, someone to rebuild under the sink,  and someone to figure out how to fill that gap.

And that lower counter top also meant this:

Ouch.

And this:

The overhang on the new counter top is not as long as the previous, so now you can see where the finish on the cupboards ends.

So now we need to hire a plumber, someone to rebuild under the sink, someone to fix the back splash, and a painter to refinish the cupboards.  Oh my.

Meanwhile:

And this:
So the under-sink stuff sits on my pretty new counter tops indefinitely.

Oh, and all those cups?  The children were given EXPLICIT instructions that they were to use NO dishes that are not disposable, obviously, since we have NO SINK!  Disposable cups, plates, and utensils were made available.  And yet water cups like these are congregating all over my house.  At least they aren't throwing them into the non-functioning sink.  (This is one instance where I'm actually glad they are not as well trained as they should be.)  No one is heeding my beseeching cries of "Use disposable cups!"  They keep claiming they forget.  They forget we have no sink?  How?

Aren't they reminded when they walk in a kitchen that is covered in a not so fine layer of dust and debris,...

piles of pots, pans, and cleaning supplies on the counters,...

and a table so full of stuff, that there is no where to eat?

OK.  Ya, well, I guess that could describe our kitchen most of the time.  But, I'm just saying.  Really, don't you think they could just remember to use the disposable cups until such as time as we have a sink?

I know.  I know.  I should be thrilled!  New granite slab counter tops!  Just what I always wanted.  After all, I do have everything I want and need.

Everything, that is, but the kitchen sink.

That looks like a major headache. I bet you cannot wait until that is over. You must have been so disappointed when the sink was not hooked up when you got back. No matter what, without a sink, life really is hard. Good luck to you. Hopefully since the weather is nice, you can eat in the back yard. But still, what a pain.
Love ya!

I feel your pain! Yes, I remember those painful days of kitchen renovation. Our pain lasted a couple of weeks-two weeks of doing dishes in the bathroom sink, and living with a constant mess. But we didn't have any cup-littering elves around.

You have a nack for storytelling. I enjoy it. The counters look good even though there is a gap and you have no sick.

GOod Luck!

I just love the way you write! Sorry about the mess. If it makes you feel better, just about every room in my house is looking like your kitchen! I'm going nuts!

I love your counters even if they are covered with the mess from the remodel. Your kitchn will be beautiful.

oh my! I can't believe you're without a sink with 6 boys! seriously! I'm impressed - equally by the beautiful counters as I am by you!

yah that stinks for sure. Boys don't usually notice alot espesially the odvious so stop getting worked up about that. It won't help.
Hey we had a similar problem when we got our counter tops. Dennis can put in the sink Ben did. Go on line to find out how. We had to paint under the counters but ours are white not a wood grain. i know it seems lame but when it's done You'll forget all the frustration.
