Most of us do it. Our birthday rolls around, and we pretend that it isn't and that we are going to stay the same age just a bit longer. Well, apparently Luke was in denial that he is turning three, and wishes he could be 2 just a little while longer. He tried his hardest to prove to himself and all of us that he really was as 2 as ever.
Luke's Birthday was Sunday, so we took him out to Applebee's on Saturday night with Aunt Shirley and Uncle Mike, to celebrate his being a big boy, supposedly old enough to bring to a restaurant. Maybe we were a bit too premature in that assumption. Luke was feeling contrary, and it was rocky from start to finish.
The picture says it all. It was his last few hours of being two and he was milking it for everything he could.
Then Sunday was his birthday, and we had a family party for Luke.
But Luke didn't get a nap and when the party started, he was fast asleep on the floor.
We had a good old time without him. Yummy Mexican dinner...
...and a pinata.
When Luke woke up he was in a FOUL mood! Oh my. Nothing would cheer him up.
Even pinata candy made him mad.
Well, he took a reprieve from his pity party to open his presents. His new Diego backpack did the trick.
We were really hoping we had made a breakthrough.
Next it was time for the cupcakes? Who doesn't get happy over cupcakes?
Apparently, not Luke. We sang the birthday song, but alas, no blowing out the candles.
N0 amount of convincing would help.
Once again, Luke sat...and frowned. This time the candle sat...and burned down.
Good thing it was a chunky candle, because it burned for a long, long, long time.
Caleb finally had enough and took care of it. Look at Luke's face. Apparently he didn't approve.
Yay, problem solved. Caleb is so proud of himself, but I don't think Luke is very appreciative of his putting and end to the pity party.
But the rest of us were.
Before cupcake.
During cupcake.
After cupcake.
Cupcakes have the same effect on me!
We should have started the party with the cupcakes, then we might have had a lot less drama.
Happy Birthday, Luke, or not Happy Birthday. Whichever. We love you either way.
Three, but forever two!

I think he wanted to stay 2. The terrible twos last from 18 months to 3 & 1/2. So not only is it terrible because it is lots of grumpy times, but because it lasts for 2 years!!!!!!! At least he is great at expressing his feelings. It was a fun party, he was really funny.
Oh I am laughing so hard at those frowny faces! Too funny how persistent he was! Glad you were able to squeeze a few smiles out of him. I'm sure my reaction to a cupcake would be just as bright... haven't had one in months!
I love that kid. He is hilarius!!
We had a great time at the restuarant Luke is a character. Thanks for letting us be a part of his little celebration! He has his dad's awnryness.
I can't believe your baby is 3 and mine is turning 3 in a few months. Great post!
Adorable!!!! What a cutie he is! You are so good at making us all smile and laugh with your clever posts!!! I'm your new biggest fan. I find myself saying, "According to Rachelle..." :) OHHHH and before I forget, Holly wants to know where you got your pennant punch or cutter or whatever it is :)
I make my pennant banners using my Big Shot machine, and Pennant Bigz Die from Stampin Up!, which I sell. You can use any die cut machine that holds the big fat dies, but the Pennant die is exclusive to Stampin' Up! and is $39.95. She can email me if she wants one.
Alysa and I just bought the fabric to make spring banners. They are going to be SO fabulous! Can't wait!
By the way, Jennifer, be careful about living life "according to Rachelle," because it might get you in trouble.
So glad you started lurking months ago, because now you are a friend!
I am wiping the tears of laughter from my face... what a great little story! My laughter captivated John as he heard me laughing out loud. It made us recall a similar experience we had with our little Jakey long ago. Simply precious my fabulous friend!
Rachelle, I just love your post! Jen sent me a link and it gave me quite a laugh. It is so cute how despite all your best efforts Luke had made up his mind to not to enjoy turning 3. It gives me comfort to know that someone else is out there with a two year old with a will of iron! You handle it so well! :) I hope he is enjoying being 3 now! Happy Birthday Luke!
That's so funny! I've seen some of the same looks on Sienna's face. Maybe it comes with that age. Haven wasn't like that at all...she was always happy. It's cute when they get moody. You sure got some great photos of him! Thank you for sharing :)
