VanBuskirks' Got Talent

Last week there was a talent show at the elementary school, and all three of our grade-schoolers participated. So did about half the school. There were 68 entree in all, and it lasted more than 3 hours!!! I guess every kid wants their moment in the spotlight. Geez.

Originally, Caleb had wanted to do the splits for his talent, but decided to expand his performance a bit, and do some Taekwando. I thought the butterfly bandage on his face really added to the whole tough guy look!

He started with a Taekwando form...

then broke a board with a front kick.

Now, when I saw that he was wearing shoes, I was dying! That kid is so funny! He knows you don't wear shoes to do TKD, but I realized at that moment that he wore them because he was afraid he wouldn't be afraid to break the board with his bare feet, so he wore shoes to make them stronger. Sweet, funny Cabes! I think it made it harder, because his sole would just slide off.

He finally broke it! What a funny kid! Priceless!

Then the moment we were all waiting for...

He dropped into the splits! What a performance!

Then Derek performed a song on the piano.

It was kind of frustrating because they had no program and no announcer, so you didn't know who was up next or who was performing, and they had the piano set up in front of the stage, so you couldn't even see the pianist so you had no idea who was playing.

Even if you couldn't see him, Derek sounded great playing "Classic Sonatina."

Later, Dylan rocked the house with his "Beach Buggy Boogie."

I must say, there was very little talent displayed at the talent show. Most of the 3 hours was taken up by kids either trying to sing (screech?) along to or dance around with some top 40 hit. We heard the same songs over and over. It is pretty clear what songs the kids like most. It was tedious to sit through. Uber-tedious.

But, the VanBuskirks got talent. They were worth waiting for!

A few days later, the twins got to perform their songs again at their piano recital. Nathan also performed his "Hall of the Mountain King." It was their first recital with their new teacher, who they like a lot. They have all really worked hard and their playing is really improving. It was so fun because my sister's girls have the same teacher so they performed at the recital too.

Everyone did a really great job!

Below are their 3 performances at the recital. Take a listen.
