We decided to spend Memorial Day away from the hustle and bustle, and headed up to our land in Idyllwild - less than an hour drive up into the mountains above our valley. It is not very far yet a world away from our desert home with its tall trees and cool breeze. That is why we purchased this land years ago in hopes of building a getaway cabin here someday (soon, I hope!) But until then, we love to just come up here and play when we get a chance. Memorial day was that chance. My sister, Lisa, and he family joined us.
The kids had a grand time running and hollering, climbing rocks and trees, and playing in the creek!
Derek found this rusty OLD knife with a bone handle. We took it away from them before somebody would have to have a few dozen tetnis shots.Lisa and I were just amazed at how they were all kept entertained for hours, and we didn't have to plan or do anything - just let them play. Nice!
They found this hunk of log and decided it would make the perfect dugout canoe so they hauled it to the creek to test out the seaworthiness of their vessel. It lasted just long enough to get this picture taken before it broke into slivers.
Before it got to late we went on our traditional hike into town. There is a trail that goes right from our land, through the county forest, right onto Idyllwild's main street.
It takes about a half hour, and that includes boulder climbing time.
When Luke heard we were going to the mountains, he insisted in wearing his winter hat, even though it was about 70 degrees and beautiful up there. I didn't argue, since it was just earlier that day that I gave him that infamous haircut from a previous post. I was happy not to look at his hair. Besides, it is so stinkin' cute on him.
The dads met us at the end of the trail with the cars, where an impromptu dance broke out to "S.I.M.P. Squirrels In My Pants" from Phineas and Ferb. Rock on!I loved Caleb's shirt that said "Gotta love this face." It was so appropriate with the big butterfly bandage stuck across his cheek. I do love that face, actually.
At the candy shop in town, the boys had the diffucult task of choosing a treat from all the colorful confections crammed into the tiny little shop.
