In the Air

Did you smell it this morning?  I did.  I walked out my front door at 5:30 this morning and there is was, faint, but impossible to miss, the moist and sweet smell.  Fall was in the air!  I sucked down one giant gulp of cool healing air, and then another.  I didn't want to get in my car.  I just wanted to stand there on my porch and breathe, slowly. With regret I climbed into my car, and was down the block and around the corner before I realized that I had an option - my car windows can actually be rolled down.  I rolled them all down, turned off the AC, and opened the sunroof.  The cool breeze whipped around frantically in my small car and against my bare arms.  I got goosebumps.  It was wonderful.  After the long hot desert summer, this felt like heaven.  I know why people in other places get so excited by the first flower of the spring, because they know the long harsh winter is almost over.  For us here, in the desert, that first whiff of fall in the air has the same effect - a sign of better days to come. Today will be another scorcher, to be sure.  All hint of fall was gone by the time I left the gym at 7am. It will likely stay hot for a while, perhaps through October.  But fall was here, and it is coming back.  You just have to be up and out early enough to catch it.

yesterday the high here in Abilene was 63 degrees. Today it will be in the 80's which is still fantastic. It was nice to have an early day of cool weather.

I miss the fall :) I know they call it "fall" down here, but it's just not what I'm used to. I miss the amazing colors and the harvest. I miss pressing cider with friends and jumping in the leaves with my kids... but you're right. Even at 6:30 when I got up, it was still cool-ish :)

I was up early too, and felt fall! YEAH! It was the best morning and for some reason I wanted to accomplish so much in that split second. (We have very similar weather....)
