Don't Look Down

So we were in sacrament meeting today when I looked down and saw this.

This is Derek.  Both those feet belong on the same kid.  Yep, Derek was wearing two different shoes to church.  The black one had a big gaping hole in it and the brown one (though you can't really see from the picture) was on the wrong foot!  He was wearing 2 right shoes!  The socks also didn't match, and the short one had a big hole in the heel.  Yes, his pants really were that short (I think they were Caleb's).  I mean, if you are going to wear mismatched shoes and socks, at least have long pants on to hide them!  Derek was also wearing a shirt with 2 missing buttons, and the safety pin was sticking up above his tie.  He couldn't find his nice glasses so he was wearing his athletic safety glasses.  I had known about the shirt and glasses prior to church, but the shoes were a complete surprise to me.  He seemed just as surprised that his shoes didn't match.  How do you miss something like that?  I had asked him if he had his shoes, but didn't think to ask if they matched.  That is so typical Derek!  Dylan, his twin, is always so dapper.  He has to always look perfect.  At church Dylan was telling people, "that's not my twin, he is just some hobo."  We love our Derek.  He doesn't have his own style - his style is no style at all.  But what he lacks in style, he makes up for in personality!

That's pretty funny. But I must ask how does a 10? Year old not know his shoes don't match. I guess in the rush of getting to the car it must have gone unnoticed?

This totally makes me crack-up. Girl, you need to be like Sargent Van Trapp and line them up prior to church and go through the line-up. Yeah, sure. Like we have time, energy and patience for that. I'm glad you blogged it. Hilarious! Plus when he is the dapper young man later on, we can say, "Remember when??" I liked Dylan's remarks.

That's our Derek. What's not to love? With him there is never a dull moment. Also with Derek what you see is what you get, and what you get is delightful.

That's too funnny! I didn't even see him :) Isn't it amazing how much of a rush we get into on Sunday mornings that we don't notice these things?

I knew that was Derek just from looking at your picture. i didn't even need to read your blog to knoww that was him. I still remember when he was wearing his shorts with the waistband around one of his legs and the hem of one pant legs around his waist. When I told him about it he didn't even care.

Way to go Dereck! Dare to be different in a great way. I know we can always count on Derek for a funny moment!

I laughed so hard...I saw him walking down the hall and just thought he must have pulled up his pants a little too high. :) It reminds me of when Cody dressed the girls for church when I had meetings and he put one of Bailey's dresses on Brittany when they were younger. They came to church and I was mortified because here comes Brit walking in with a dress that went to about her mid-thigh and the empire waist was up to the middle of her chest. I sure wish I would've taken a picture now. The thing I love about this is that he was completely fine all day and went about his business. That's a boy that's okay in his own skin. I love it!!

Awesome! What a great story. Speaking from a family of four boys myself, that is one for the books. I think Dennis is rubbing off on Derek a little bit though. He might not have told you Rachelle, but he played a basketball game at the church about 6 months ago wearing two left shoes. The story goes that he arrived just in time for the tip-off, grabbed his shoes, started to put them on, and realized they were both for the left foot. He was a man about it though and played the entire game like that! Knowing you are in for a few blisters and playing through the pain is as studly as it gets. Tell Dennis to come clean and fess up though. I think his experience deserves a blog entry as well!
